Compliance Decision Tree: Which Certification Do You Need?

If you are unsure where to start, answer these questions in order:

  1. Where are you selling? → This determines your market (EU, US, UK, Saudi Arabia, Japan).
  2. What is your product category? → Electronics, kitchenware, toys, or general goods.
  3. Does your product have a wireless function? → If yes and you sell in the EU, you need CE-RED (not just CE). If yes and you sell in the US, you need FCC Certification (not just SDoC).
  4. Does your product contact food or water? → If yes and you sell in the US, you need FDA FCM testing. In the EU, you need REACH compliance.
  5. Is your product intended for children under 12? → If yes and you sell in the US, you need CPC certification.
  6. Do you sell on Amazon? → Amazon enforces these requirements strictly. In the EU, you also need a GPSR Responsible Person and EPR packaging registration regardless of product type.

Latest Regulatory Updates (2026)

Regulations change frequently. Here are the most impactful updates in 2026 that cross-border sellers need to know:

  • EU GPSR (General Product Safety Regulation): Enforced since December 2024. Amazon EU has begun mass-suspending listings without a designated Responsible Person. All non-EU sellers must appoint an EU-based RP by Q1 2026 or face listing removal. See our GPSR guide.
  • EU Battery Regulation (2023/1542): Phased enforcement through 2027. Affects any product with a lithium battery (smart pet feeders, GPS collars, Bluetooth trackers). Requires carbon footprint declaration, recycled content minimums, and battery passport. See our CE-RED guide for details.
  • EU REACH SVHC List: Updated to 240+ substances as of January 2026. Amazon auto-removes listings without a REACH SVHC declaration. Testing must be done by an ISO 17025-accredited lab. See our REACH guide.
  • UKCA Deadline: The UK government has confirmed UKCA will be required for most products sold in Great Britain from June 2027. CE marks will no longer be accepted for products that require UKCA. See our UKCA guide.
  • Saudi SABER: SASO expanded the SABER requirement to cover additional product categories in 2025. Shipments without a valid SABER Certificate of Conformity (PCoC/SCoC) are rejected at Saudi customs. See our SABER guide.
  • Japan PSE: METI has increased enforcement against foreign sellers, especially on Amazon Japan. Class II electronics (heat-generating appliances) require the Diamond PSE mark from a registered conformity assessment body. See our PSE guide.
